Day 1-Arrive in Nepal

Namaste! Welcome to Kathmandu: the exotic and chaotic capital of Nepal! Our first day abroad is an easy one.  Since the time difference from North America to Nepal is roughly between 10-13 hours,  your body needs a day to rest from the long flight over.  Therefore, today is a free day.  At the end of the day, we will have a welcome dinner and meeting to get to know everyone attending, go over gear, and complete all necessary forms for our trek!

Special Information: Attending the welcome meeting is mandatory, as we will be collecting insurance details, filling out forms for our permits, going over gear, and making sure that everybody is prepared for the trek ahead of us!  


Flight delays happen.  Unforeseen events that might affect the trip also happen.  Therefore, we recommend that you arrive a day or two before the first day of the hike to ensure that you arrive on time and have enough time to adapt to the time change.

Day 2: City tour

While we wait for our trekking permits to finalize, we spend the day on a tour of the nation’s capital.  We will explore Durbar Square, Thamel, Pashupatinath Temple, and nearby markets around the capital.  During this time we can also stop at local trekking shops to rent or purchase any gear that is needed for the hike.

Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu

to Lukla and hike to Phakding

Ele­va­tion: 8,563 ft / 2,610 m

Trekking distance: 5 miles+/-

Today, the real fun begins!  Today we have an early start with a stunningly beautiful 40-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and begin our quest to Everest Base Camp.  After landing, we have a nice breakfast in Lukla before our trek begins.  Our first day out is pretty mellow, with about 3 hours of trekking and a descent of around -200 feet into Phakding.

Day 4:  Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Ele­va­tion: 11,286 ft / 3,440 m

Trekking distance: 4 miles+/-

Today we will trek around 6-7 hours to Namche Bazaar.  From Phakding we’ll cross the river many times over suspension bridges and head up the valley.  The trail is in the forest, follows the river valley and we will have picturesque views the whole way!  High Himalayan peaks above 20,000 feet line the trail and we will have views of the peaks of snow-capped Kusum Kanguru (20,895’) and Thamserku (21,729’). Lunch will be had in Monjo (9,300’), which is about half way from Phakding to Namche Bazaar.  This makes it a good place to break for lunch. From here we start our ascent to Namche Bazaar and enter into Sagamartha national park.  Here, we will have our first glimpse of the peaks of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam.

Day 5: Rest day in Namche Bazaar

Ele­va­tion: 11,286 ft / 3,440 m

Trekking distance: 4-6 miles

Today we will stay another night in Namche Bazaar to help us acclimate to the elevation in the Himalayas.  We’ll start the day about an hour before sunrise and hike about 30 minutes to Sagarmatha National Park headquarters.  Here, there are panoramic views of Mt. Everest(29,035’), Lhotse (27,940’), Nuptse(25,791’), Ama Dablam(22,349’),  and other magnificent peaks in the area.  We can also admire our first real view of the trek ahead and watch the sunrise, and have great photo opportunities, before making our way back down to our teahouse to have breakfast.  After breakfast, we will take an optional hike up higher in elevation to take in the views and enjoy the crisp and refreshing mountain air that Namche Bazaar has to offer.  Any additional gear that we might need to purchase or rent can be done here at the bazaar.

Day 6: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

Ele­va­tion: 12,664 ft / 3,860 m

Trekking distance: 6 miles+/-

After a relaxing day in Namche Bazaar, we start the day early and take 6-7 hours to trek the 6 miles to our next destination of Tengboche.  We ascend above the treeline and have panoramic views of high mountain peaks the whole day! The trail follows the river below and has incredible views of Ama Dablam, which is often considered the most beautiful mountain in the world.

Day 7: Tengboche to Dingboche

Ele­va­tion: 14,469 ft / 4,406 m

Trekking distance: 7 miles+/-

Today our trek will be another 6-7 hours and the distance covered will be roughly 7 miles.  This will be our second day above the treeline and although Everest will be mostly hidden behind the stunning Lhotse-Nuptse Ridge, the huge peaks that tower above the eastern end of the valley are absolutely incredible to say the least!  This is the day that most people really start to feel the altitude.

Day 8: Rest day in Dingboche

Ele­va­tion: 14,469 ft / 4,406 m

Trekking distance: 4-7 miles

We have another rest day on the schedule today but that doesn’t mean that we’re not out being active!  We have many possibilities for our adventure for the day that we will discuss the night before.  We can either backtrack our trek from yesterday and make our way to Ama Dablam base camp, take a trek to Chukkhung, or summit the nearby peak of Nangkartshang.  Either option will take us higher into the Himalaya and we will once again come down to sleep at a lower elevation to help with the acclimation process.

Day 9: Dingboche to Lobuche

Ele­va­tion: 16,109 ft / 4,910 m

Trekking distance: 5 miles+/-

The last few days were spent hiking pretty much due north.  Today we turn to the northwest and get new views to experience!  The morning begins with a mellow, gradual uphill ascent for the first hour with views of Lobuche Peak(20,162’), Cholatse(21,130’), and Taboche(21,310’), just to name a few!  We then pass over a bridge and begin our climb over Thok La Pass, which has memorials dedicated to many mountaineers, porters and others that have perished on their quest to summit Everest over the past 50 years or so.

Day 10: Lobuche to Everest Base Camp, return to Gorak Shep

Ele­va­tion: 16,942 ft / 5,1640 m

Trekking distance: 7 miles+/-

Today is the big day!  The day that you signed up for and the day that you’ve been envisioning since you can remember!  The day’s trek parallels the fabled Khumbu Glacier all the way up to Gorak Shep.  Here, we will drop off all our stuff, grab lunch and continue the day up to EBC!  It’s a short 1.5-2-hour trek to base camp and along the trail, we will have up close views of Nuptse, which absolutely dominates the view the whole way!  The views of Everest itself is not spectacular, but we will be able to see glorious glaciers, lakes, caves, and the notorious Everest Ice Fall that flows from the Western Cwm.  After spending as much time as needed at base camp, we will return to Gorak Shep for the evening.

Day 14: Climb Gokyo Ri

Trekking distance: 3 miles +/-

Day 11: Gorak Shep to Kala Pattar to Zhong La

Ele­va­tion: 15,842 ft / 4,830 m

Trekking distance: 10 miles+/-

Wake up early morning and walk up to Kala Patthar (5,550m) for the sunrise over Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and Pumori. The views are amazing and Everest is magnificent. We continue our descent to the sandy flat expanse of Gorak Shep, back to the lodge for a breakfast and then onwards to Lobuche. Right before Thugla Pass, we leave the main trail we walked on the way up and take another trail to our right. Overnight in Dzong La.

Day 12: Zhong La to Dragnag via Cho La Pass

Ele­va­tion: 15,252 ft / 4,650 m

Trekking distance: 12 miles+/-

We walk on flat stone trails today for a while and reach the valley. Then we follow a steep uphill path and cross the Chola Glacier. The last stretch of the pass is on a rocky trail. Upon reaching the top (5,420m), enjoy the mesmerizing views of Cho Oyu, Mt Everest and Amadablam. Then we descend steeply on a loose rocky trail that leads us to Phedi and Tragnag. It is a small village with few guesthouses and tea shops, backdropping Machhermo peak.

Day 13: Dragnag to Gokyo 

Ele­va­tion: 15,550 ft / 4,740 m

Trekking distance: 9 miles+/-

We trek along the glacier route until we reach the first Lake of Gokyo. We then cross Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest in Nepal and the Dudh Koshi River source, and follow an easy, flat path following Dudh Koshi up to Gokyo Valley. The village of Gokyo is on the shore of the third lake, Dudh Pokhari. You will be amazed by the natural beauty of Dudh Pokhari Lake. This is one of the most scenic locations in the region, with the peaks of Cho Oyu and Gyachung glimmering in the distance.

Get up early for a climb up to Gokyo Peak, which offers some of the best panoramas in the Khumbu region.  Everest, Lhotse and Makalu will all be visible in the early morning sun. Then we will retrace our steps to Gokyo and have plenty of time for exploring the Gokyo valley and eventually hike to the fifth lake.

Day 15: Gokyo to Machermo

Elevation: 14,660/4,470 m

Trekking distance: 8 miles +/-

We trek to Machhermo through alpine meadows and past small settlements, following Dhudh Koshi River downstream. If you’re still feeling energetic, there is an excellent spot just above the village where you can see Cho Oyu towering high above.

*Special Itinerary Notes:   

Weather in the Himalayas can change rapidly without any notice, which can result in changes to be made on our intended itineraries. Even though the weather in Kathmandu might be bright and sunny, it could be cloudy in Lukla.  Additionally, the airport at Lukla does not have radar or navigation equipment so the pilots are completely dependent on if they can see or not.  Flights throughout Nepal are often delayed or canceled due to poor weather conditions. Flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are particularly prone to these delays which has the potential to vary the itinerary of our tour departures. Our contingency plans in case of bad weather are as follows:


Day 2 – We will attempt to board our booked flight as per the itinerary. If this flight is canceled, we will return to our hotel in Kathmandu for an additional night and have a free day in the nation’s capital.


Day 3 – We will again attempt to board our booked flight. If this flight is canceled we will charter a helicopter to transport the group, provided helicopters are available and weather does not prevent them from flying to Lukla.


Our guests will need to use their mandatory emergency fund to cover the cost of the chartered helicopter. The exact cost will depend on how many travelers are in our group and could be up to $500. If we reach Lukla on day 3 by either aircraft or helicopter we will follow the same itinerary to Everest Base Camp but descend from base camp to Lukla in two days in order to take our return flight from Lukla on day 14.


Day 4 – If both airplanes and helicopters are unable to reach Lukla on the morning of day 3, then on day 4 we will travel by road to Phaplu, which is an approximately 9-hour drive by private vehicle.  From Phaplu we will then trek to Tengboche on the Everest Base Camp route via Lukla. A group decision based on departure dates will be made on the hike on how to proceed.  

We also advise allowing a few extra days in Kathmandu at the end of your trip should your return flights from Lukla be delayed due to weather conditions.

Day 16: Machermo to Namche Bazaar

Elevation: 11,286 ft/ 3,440 m

Trekking distance: 10 miles +/-

Get a distant view of Tengboche monastery and descend to Phunke Tenga. Then we follow the steep uphill trail to Mong La, followed by a few hours’ downhill and level hike to Namche.

Day 17: Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Elevation: 8,563 ft/ 2,610 m

Trekking distance: 12 miles +/-

It’s a long but enjoyable and rewarding walk from Namche Bazaar to Lukla. Take your time to take in Sherpa village life on your last day of trekking in the Himalayas. Check-in for the overnight and relax with an ice-cold beer after the rigorous adventure you’ve just completed.

Day 18: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu
Elevation: 4,383 ft/ 1,336 m

Our time in the mountains comes to an end and we catch a morning flight back to Kathmandu and have a transfer to our hotel in the Thamel area.  After settling in, we go for our last, and well-deserved group activity: A nice massage!  After the massage, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy!

What To Pack

You can expect to walk around 80-90 miles altogether on your trek to Everest Base Camp through many climate zones and altitudes ranging from 9,000 feet all the way up to 18,500.  It is very easy to over pack and bring along items that are not necessary.  Our porters can carry a maximum of 10 kg/22 lbs each, and each porter is split between two guests.  This means that every guest can give their porter about 11 lbs each so packing only what is necessary is very important!  Anything over 11kg/22 lbs will be carried by the trekker themselves.




If you’re traveling to Nepal with someone, have a discussion on what to bring and weigh your packs before arriving in Kathmandu.  




Passport:  This is the one item you can’t get in Nepal!


Cash:  Please bring about $500-$700.  If our flight is not able to land at Lukla because of weather conditions, we will take a helicopter at a cost of about $400/person that is not covered in the cost of the trek. 


Main backpack:  We suggest a 50-60 liter pack that has a hip belt.  This is what you will be splitting with your partner or someone and what your porter will be carrying.


Daypack:  An internal frame climbing/trekking pack of approximately 20-30 liters in carrying capacity. Emphasize simple, lightweight designs.  Snacks, water, cameras, toiletries and other immediate necessities will be carried in this pack. 


Trekking poles: Collapsible skiing/trekking poles. Three section, adjustable-height models are preferred.


Socks: Two pairs of heavy socks.  One pair for trekking and one pair for the teahouses.  


Hiking boots: Waterproof hiking boots designed for hiking in cool to cold conditions. Insulated boots with room in the toe box and good ankle support should be stressed.  Brands I suggest are La Sportiva, Salomon, and Merrell are all great name brand boots.


Sandals/Flip flops:  After a long day of trekking, wearing these around the tea houses makes it very comfortable.  That, plus taking showers in them is also recommended.


Underwear:  2-3 pairs of synthetic or wool fabrics are highly recommended.  Once cotton gets wet, it takes a long time to dry out so we do not recommend it.


Bottom Base layer:  It can get very cold at night, so something warm that is made out of synthetic or wool is recommended.  Avoid cotton!


Synthetic T-shirt: One or two short-sleeved outdoor t-shirts for hiking on warm days.


Long-sleeve top base layer:  This item must be made of a non-cotton material such as merino wool or polyester. Note that light-colored, hooded shirts are strongly recommended for sun protection, and are worn by guides throughout most climbs.


Hiking pants: One pair of lightweight synthetic hiking pants. Some prefer to bring zip-off styles, though that is not required.

Midlayer top: One or two midweight, form-fitting, lightweight fleece layer for use over baselayers. Hoods are optional but recommended.


Insulated Parka: This jacket or parka should be heavily insulated with high-quality down fill. We recommend an overall parka weight between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds. For warmth, a hood is required.


Softshell gloves: Midweight, lightly insulated gloves for use when mittens are too warm and liner gloves are not warm enough.


Insulated gloves: One pair of warm shell gloves with insulated removable liners. Excellent for use when conditions are too cold for softshell gloves, but too warm for expedition mittens.


Hat: The sun on the whole hike can be very intense!  Any style of lightweight hat for shading the head will work well. Baseball caps and sombrero-style sun hats are the most common.


Ski hat:  A non-cotton wool or synthetic hat that covers the head and ears comfortably.


Sunglasses: I recommend Julbo Explorer 2.0 mountaineering sunglasses.  


Headlamp: Sometimes we will start the hike before sunrise and sometimes you will need to use the restroom at night!


0° Fahrenheit sleeping bag:  Teahouses can get extremely cold at night, as many of them don’t have any heat.  Whether filled with down or synthetic insulation, your sleeping bag should be rated to approximately 0° Fahrenheit and feature a collared hood for warmth. Be sure to include a compression stuff sack. Weather conditions and your body temperature needs may effect what rating of sleeping bag you require. 

Water Bottle:  Bring two one-liter capacity water bottles. Wide-mouth, hard-sided, plastic bottles are ideal. Nalgene brand bottles are recommended. Do not bring metal bottles, and do not bring soft-sided water bottles.

Toiletries: Tooth brush, tooth paste, sun screen, lip balm, hand sanitizer, etc.

Medical kit:  We will bring a large medical kit, but it’s always a good idea to have your own!

  • MANDATORY insurance policies (medical, evacuation, trip cancellation, etc.)  Your insurance must have coverage for trekking above 5,000 meters and helicopter evacuation.

  • Please note:  At times, trekkers have been delayed from either Kathmandu or Lukla.  This is caused by either inclement weather in Kathmandu or Lukla.  During these times, we may be required to take a helicopter to or from the trek.  The cost is approximately $400 per person that is paid by the trekker. 

  • Personal gear

  • Excess baggage fees on the flight to and from Lukla.  You’re allowed 10kg for a checked bag and 5kg for your carry-on.

  • Personal Expenses on the trek:  Telephone, Internet, battery recharge, showers, laundry, alcoholic beverages, boiled water, coke, clothing, etc.

  • International airport departure taxes and Nepal entry visas

  • RT-PCR or Antigen test required for return to United States

  • Sherpa and guide tip pool (we suggest $100-$250 per person)

  • Any expenses from COVID-19 or COVID-19 testing that causes delays or quarantine requirements such as additional lodging, food, transfers, border issues, delayed test results, etc.

Policy and Procedure


We require all participants to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to join our programs. You will need to send a copy of your COVID-19 Vaccination Card to before you can be confirmed for your desired program.

We also require participants to read, sign, and agree to our COVID-19 Operating Procedures in order to participate in the program. Additionally, Nepal has stringent COVID-19 entry requirements, which are administered by the airlines. Check with your specific airline for details.



Deposit Payments: A non-refundable deposit payment of $1,000 USD per person secures your reservation.  This covers your hotel reservations in Kathmandu for pre and post-trek, as well as the round-trip flight from Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu.  

Deposit payments may be made via Venmo, Apple Pay, Zelle, or PayPal.*

Balance Payments: The balance payment is due 45 days before the start of your program.

  • Balance payments may only be made via e-check/ACH, check from a U.S. bank, Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, or a wire transfer.**

    • **Wire transfers must cover all fees charged by your bank. The amount of the incoming wire to our bank must equal the balance payment amount.

  • A payment reminder is emailed approximately three weeks before your payment due date. If your balance payment is not received 45 days before the start of your program, your reservation will be canceled, and all program fees forfeited.

  • Payment in full is required when registering for a program within 45 days of the departure date.

*There is a 3% surcharge on all credit/debit card transactions. Credit/debit cards are not accepted for payments of $10,000 or more.


The $1,000 per person deposit is non-refundable unless the trip does not materialize.

All cancellations require written notification. Once we receive your written notification of cancellation, the following apply:

If you cancel 45 or more days before the start of your program, then your fee will be refunded, with the exception of the $1,000 per person deposit.

If you cancel less than 45 days before the start of your program, no refunds will be issued.

Due to the time-sensitive nature of these programs, and the amount of preparation time required for this program, we strictly adhere to our policy and cannot make exceptions for any reason.



We require that everyone purchase travel insurance. We recommend World Nomads explorer plans.


Trekking in the Himalaya is both an individual challenge and a team endeavor. Each Participant is required to share in the responsibility of the safety and success of the team. For this reason, we ask that each Participant:

  • Possess the necessary physical and mental fitness required for this program.

  • Be responsible for knowing all pre-departure information.

  • Update Tyler Brooks Photography LLC if there are any changes to your health or medical information before departure.

  • Be properly attired and equipped as outlined in the Equipment List.

  • Act in a considerate manner toward all team members and show respect for local customs, values, and traditions in the areas we travel.

  • Help minimize our impact on the environment and follow appropriate Leave No Trace practices.

  • Describe yourself, honestly and accurately, in terms of fitness, health, skills, abilities, and your equipment to your guide staff.

  • Communicate with your guide staff on the mountain if there are any changes in your medications or health.

  • Adhere to the advice of your guide staff.

  • Continue to self-assess throughout the program, measuring your fitness, health, skills, and abilities against the demands required of the program.

Tyler Brooks Photography LLC reserves the right to dismiss the Participant from a program or to send the Participant to a lower altitude at any time if the sherpa support staff determines, in its sole discretion, that the participant is not physically, technically, or psychologically prepared for, or capable of participating in the program, or for any other reason that may compromise the safety, health or well-being of the participant or the entire group. If this decision is made, the Participant will not receive any refunds or credits and will be financially responsible for any additional costs associated with an early departure, including but not limited to, evacuation, transportation, hotel reservations, meals, etc.


Tyler Brooks Photography LLC does not tolerate harassment or mistreatment of our participants, partners, or employees. Inappropriate conduct under this policy may include conduct that creates a disrespectful, intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating, or offensive environment for a participant or employee. Engaging in such conduct is a violation of this policy.

Tyler Brooks Photography LLC may consider conduct to be in violation of the policy even if it falls short of unlawful harassment under applicable law. When determining whether conduct violates this policy, we will consider whether a reasonable person could conclude that the conduct created an intimidating, hostile, degrading, or demeaning environment.

Violation of this policy may result in removal from a program, as well as refusal to provide services indefinitely. We place the utmost value on the safety of our participants and employees. Please report any incidents to Tyler Brooks Photography LLC management.



In the interest of the safety and well-being of all participants,Tyler Brooks Photography LLC adheres to the following age-appropriate guidelines:

Ages 18 & above only

An individual’s birthday must precede the departure date of the program. For example, a 17-year-old who turns 18 on July 1 may participate on a program beginning July 2.

Under-aged participants on Private Climb or Group Climb programs are assessed on an individual basis.

A parent or legal guardian must accompany the minor trekker throughout the entirety of the program. If either trekker must descend at any time during the program, both climbers must descend together.

A parent or legal guardian must sign for any Participant that is under 18 years of age. On behalf of any minor participant, the parent or legal guardian understands and accepts all the terms of the Program Policies.



Tyler Brooks Photography LLC cannot guarantee that you will reach Mt. Everest Base Camp. Weather, route conditions, your own abilities, or the abilities of other climbers may create circumstances that make an ascent unsafe, and you or your entire group may have to turn around without reaching the summit.

Failure to reach the base camp due to a person’s own lack of fitness or to any of the events associated with mountaineering (such as weather, route conditions, avalanche hazard, team dynamics, etc.), are not Tyler Brooks Photography LLC responsibility and will not result in a refund, credit, or reschedule.



Tyler Brooks Photography LLC program schedule and itineraries are subject to change or adjustment based on a number of factors. These include, but are not limited to, route conditions, weather, group strength, terrain, or other environmental factors, and many other factors. Tyler Brooks Photography has complete discretion to change plans to accommodate any of these or other factors, including but not limited to increases in program fees, changes to program schedule or itinerary, and changes to guides or staff, as necessary for the proper and safe conduct of the program. Once the program has started, the Lead Guide will decide on any changes to the itinerary, including ending the program early if the continuation of the program may compromise the safety, health, or well-being of the group.

We reserve the right to cancel any program due to inadequate signups, weather, route conditions, or for any other reason. In such a case, we will make every effort to reschedule the Participant on a different program date. If rescheduling is not possible, we will issue the Participant a refund for all program fees paid to Tyler Brooks Photography LLC, less any non-refundable payments made on behalf of the Participant to secure any of the included land costs provided for this program, including but not limited to, hotel accommodations, transportation, transfers, tours, group equipment and food, permits, and local outfitter services, prior to the cancellation of the program.

Additionally, Tyler Brooks Photography LLC cannot be responsible for any non-refundable expenses the Participant incurred in preparation for the program (i.e., airline tickets, hotel reservations, rental cars, equipment purchases or rentals, etc.).

Once a program begins, there are no refunds or credits for weather-related cancellations or for a program that may end early due to weather, route conditions, or any other circumstances that may compromise the health, safety, or well-being of the group. Furthermore, if the Participant decides for any reason not to begin a program or to discontinue a program at any time, no refunds or credits will be issued. The Participant will be responsible for all additional costs associated with an early departure, including but not limited to evacuation, transportation, hotel reservations, meals, etc.

The Participant is responsible for any costs due to COVID-19, including but not limited to, any testing fees to enter another country, tests required to return to the US, and/or costs associated with medical care and/or quarantine such as hotel accommodations, meals, separate transportation, etc.

Land Costs are provided as a package, and refunds or credits will not be issued for any unused meals, accommodations, group transportation, or other unused costs. Accommodations are based on double occupancy. A Single Supplement Fee will be charged to those Participants occupying single accommodations either by choice or circumstance. If you are willing to share a room, we will make every effort to pair you with another same-gender team member. We will match willing same-gender team members based on the order of registration date. If we are unable to match you with another same-gender team member, a single supplement fee will be charged. The availability of single accommodations is limited in most of the hotels where we stay, and single accommodations are not available while in the mountains.


The Participant understands and agrees that Tyler Brooks Photography LLC assumes no responsibility or liability in connection with any travel and hospitality services provided to the Participant by other companies in connection with the program, including but not limited to, the services provided by airlines, hotels, rental cars, and transportation companies and that Tyler Brooks Photography LLC is not responsible for any act, error, omission, or any injury, loss, accident, delay, irregularity, or danger by a supplier of travel or hospitality services to the Participant in connection with the Tyler Brooks Photography LLC program. The Participant will be responsible for all costs associated with any travel delays, missed connections, or missing baggage that requires additional arrangements (separate transportation, hotel accommodations, meals, etc.) to be made on your behalf for you or your baggage to rejoin the program.
